Lake Norman Bass Fishing Information

Lake Norman, near Charlotte NC, is a great bass fishery for catching shear numbers of bass. There are larger bass in Lake Norman, but you're more likely to catch dozens of 1 to 2 pound spotted bass. Occasionally, you will catch a 5+ pound fish, particularly during the spawning period in the Spring. Tournament fisherman will need a 5 bass limit weighing 12 to 16 pounds in order to have a chance to win a bass fishing tournament on Lake Norman. Occasional catches up to 20 pounds for 5 bass are possible, but are extremely rare. Dominant patterns for catching bass on Lake Norman are crankbaits, jigs, plastic worms. The best colors for lures typically are green pumpkin or other natural colors for soft plastics, and anything resembling a shad for hard baits. Topwater baits, fished in and around docks, are hard to beat during low-light hours.

NC Bass Fishing Guide

Lake Norman offers shallow water fishing, deep water fishing, ledge fishing, dock fishing, river fishing (upper lake), and nearly every type of cover that is important in bass fishing. The one thing you won't find in great supply on Lake Norman, like most lakes in NC, is grass. Primary cover will be rock or some form of wood.

With two "hot holes" on Lake Norman, you can expect to catch good numbers of spotted bass and largemouth bass all winter long. These areas are created by the warm water discharge from 2 power generation plants on the lake.

Lake Norman is the largest lake in North Carolina and is referred to as an "inland sea" with 520 miles of shoreline and a surface area of more than 32,475 acres. Lake Norman is nearly as large as the other ten lakes on the Catawba River combined. Full pond elevation at Lake Norman is 760 feet.
